Plavix Attorneys

Plavix attorneys at Arentz Law Group are currently accepting Plavix side effects lawsuits in all 50 states.  A popular blood thinner, Plavix (clopidogrel bisulfate) was approved in 1997 to help prevent blood clots that may lead to heart attacks and strokes.  Unfortunately, consumers were not adequately warned of potentially fatal Plavix side effects, and thousands of victims have suffered serious injury or death as a result.  If you have suffered internal bleeding, heart attack, stroke, or other serious injuries after taking Plavix, you could be entitled to significant compensation in a dangerous drug lawsuit.  Contact a Plavix lawyer today to become educated about your rights in a free legal consultation.

Plavix Side Effects

Generating more than $8.8 billion in global sales in 2010, Plavix is the second best-selling drug in the world.  After its release in 1997, Plavix was aggressively marketed as providing superior cardiovascular benefits and enhanced safety over aspirin.  Unfortunately, now many attorneys contend that these claims were false, and that drug-makers Bristol-Myers Squibb and Sanofi SA withheld important safety information when they rushed Plavix to market.  A New England Journal of Medicine study concluded that people who use Plavix have a 12-times higher chance of developing recurring ulcers, gastrointestinal bleeding, and brain hemorrhages than people who take a combination of aspirin and heartburn medication.  When the companies were asked by the FDA to revise their advertising messages in 2009, they failed to comply, potentially endangering the safety and lives of many thousands of Plavix users.

Potential Plavix side effects include:

  • Cerebral (brain) bleeding
  • Gastrointestinal bleeding
  • Other internal bleeding
  • Thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP)
  • Ulcers
  • Heart attack
  • Bone marrow damage
  • Stroke
  • Death

A recent study conducted by the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) in which 3,000 patients were studied since 2003 was halted when researchers determined that people who use Plavix and also take aspirin face a markedly higher risk of bleeding and death.  In the study, 6.6% of Plavix/aspirin users experienced hemorrhaging, while only 3.3% of the aspirin-only patients had bleeding.  5.8% of the Plavix/aspirin users in the study died, while only 4.1% of the aspirin-only patients studied died.  As a result of this study, the deputy director of the NINDS stated, “For stroke…the combination does not offer any protection, but does put you at increased risk for bleeding.”
