Xarelto Bleeding RisksXarelto InjuriesWhy File a Xarelto Lawsuit?
Xarelto is a new blood thinner that was approved by the FDA in July 2011 to prevent stroke, pulmonary embolism, and blood clots in patients who are recovering from knee or hip replacement surgery. Xarelto was granted approval to prevent blood clots and strokes in patients with atrial fibrillation in November 2011. It generally is prescribed as an alternative to warfarin (Coumadin).
Rivaroxaban (Xarelto) was originally marketed as providing the same or slightly better results than warfarin in preventing strokes and other blood clot-related events, but were easier to use because weekly or monthly blood level tests were not required or available. Unfortunately, by the end of it’s first year on the market, Xarelto was found to have caused 2,081 serious adverse events including at least 151 deaths. It was ultimately found that Xarelto, although originally thought to be superior to older classes of anticoagulant drugs, had a substantially higher number of adverse events than other anticoagulant drugs.

The primary adverse event associated with Xarelto is hemorrhage or excessive bleeding.  Excessive bleeding is a known risk of all anticoagulant drugs, but what many doctors and patients did not realize about Xarelto was that the risk of these events may actually be higher than similar drugs and because, unlike other anticoagulant drugs,  there is no antidote to Xarelto.  Hemorrhage due to Xarelto cannot be stopped and is much more likely to lead to patient death than bleeding events occurring in those who take drugs for which there is an antidote.

Bayer and Johnson & Johnson’s Janssen Pharmaceuticals, Inc. are facing several Xarelto lawsuits alleging that the drug is dangerous and defective.
Lawsuits accuse Xarelto manufacturers of several counts, including;

  • The manufacturers of Xarelto marketed the drug as a superior to other anticoagulants despite studies finding higher rates of gastrointestinal (GI tract) bleeding and transfusions in Xarelto users than in users of other anticoagulant drugs.
  • Users of Xarelto were not adequately warned of the health risks of suffering a fatal bleeding event.
  • The makers of the drug continue to market Xarelto as a safe anticoagulant option.
  • Doctors and medical staff were not properly made aware of methods to stabilize and treat a Xarelto user in the event of a bleeding complication.
  • Xarelto is linked to serious bleeding complications, excessive blood loss, intracranial hemorrhaging, eye bleeding (vitreous hemorrhage), stomach bleeding, gastrointestinal bleeding, wound infections from inhibited clotting, and lack of effectiveness in preventing dangerous clotting
