Invokana Linked to Ketoacidosis
Since the diabetes drug’s approval in March 2013, Invokana has earned billions of dollars for Janssen Pharmaceuticals, and parent company Johnson & Johnson. However, that money has come at a severe cost for some patients. Studies show that taking Invokana can lead to developing ketoacidosis, a rare condition that can cause renal failure, diabetic coma, and even death. The FDA has issued a safety warning about Invokana risks and has required the drug manufacturers to change their labeling to include warnings about it’s potential to cause Ketoacidosis and other serious side effects. Invokana and other SGLT2 inhibitors under investigation
Invokana is part of a class of prescription drugs called SGLT2 inhibitors. SGLT2 inhibitors are intended to lower blood sugar in adults with type 2 diabetes by causing the kidneys to remove sugar from the body through the urine. Unfortunately, Invokana and similar drugs have also been found cause the release of excess levels of acidic ketones, which can result in ketoacidosis, a dangerous and potentially fatal condition that is associated with renal toxicity and kidney failure, extreme weight loss, dehydration, abdominal pain, vomiting, coma, even death.
Invokana Ketoacidosis Lawsuits
Diabetes patients filing Invokana lawsuits allege that the manufacturers and marketers of Invokana failed to warn patients and physicians of the increased risks of ketoacidosis to patients taking the drug. Ketoacidosis lawsuits claim that if the drug makers had adequately warned of the risks, patients would have been able to make a more informed decision on treatment for their diabetes and may have opted for a substitute medication. Patients also claim that, had they decided to take the medication, they would have had their ketone levels monitored by their physician and would have been more able to recognize the symptoms of ketoacidosis.
Your Legal Rights
- Although many of the side effects of Invokana were known and reported following clinical trials; some of the more serious risks were not reported.
- The drug company’s failure to uncover and/or serious side effects suggests that studies were either inadequate, or the manufacturers chose to intentionally not report them.
- Arentz Law Group is currently investigating claims on behalf of those who were prescribed Invokana or other SGLT2 inhibitors as treatment for type II diabetes and who developed ketoacidosis, kidney failure, heart attack, or other serious side effects.
