What is a Mirena IUD?
Mirena is an intrauterine device (IUD) which a doctor inserts into a woman’s uterus as a form of birth control. Approved by the FDA in 2000, the device is small and T-shaped, and it continuously releases small amounts of levonorgestrel, a hormone which prevents pregnancy. Mirena is also sometimes used as a treatment for women who have very heavy periods, as it can often prevent menstruation altogether. Mirena can remain in the body effectively for up to five years, and it can be removed should the woman decide she would like to pursue pregnancy. Though Mirena is promoted as being a very safe form of reversible birth control, many women have suffered serious injuries as a result of implantation with Mirena IUDs.
Mirena Side Effects and Problems
