Tanning Bed Skin Cancer Lawsuits

The product liability lawyers at Arentz Law Group, P.C. are currently investigating lawsuits in all 50 states on behalf of victims who have developed skin cancer as a result of using tanning beds.  A number of reports and respected studies have drawn a now irrefutable link between tanning beds and melanoma, the most aggressive and deadly form of skin cancer.  If you were diagnosed with melanoma or skin cancer that you believe may be linked to your use of tanning beds, you could be entitled to substantial financial compensation for your damages.

Tanning Beds and Melanoma

In the July 2012 issue of the British Medical Journal, European researchers published the results of a study that concluded that women who use tanning beds face a 20% higher risk of developing skin cancer.  The scientists went on to state that the risk of developing skin cancer after using tanning beds increases to 87% when people begin to use tanning beds before the age of 35, and that roughly 1 in 20 cases of melanoma can be linked to the use of tanning beds.  According to estimates by these researchers, in the year 2008 alone, 3,438 cases of melanoma and nearly 800 deaths in Europe could be linked to the use of tanning beds.

In conclusion, the researchers stated, “sunbed use is associated with a significant increase in risk of melanoma. This risk increases with number of sunbed sessions and with initial usage at a young age (< 35 years). The cancerous damage associated with sunbed use is substantial and could be avoided by strict regulations.”

A number of countries, including Brazil, have banned the use of tanning beds for anyone under the age of 18.  In New York, Governor Andrew Cuomo recently signed a bill that bans the use of indoor tanning beds for children under 17 and requires parental consent for teens from 17 to 18 years old before they may use a tanning bed.
