The ODA grants special status to companies that manufacture medications prescribed to treat rare diseases. Elmiron is a prescription medication used to treat bladder inflammation in people who suffer from interstitial cystitis (IC). IC is a chronic condition that causes bladder pain and inflammation. It is currently the only drug approved to treat IC, with no generic versions. According to HealthDay  Women more often use the drug long-term.  When initially introduced in 1996 Elmiron was thought to be completely safe. However, in 2019 it was discovered that the use of Elmiron can cause retinal damage to the eyes. This damage is called Maculopathy, a progressive disease that can lead to vision loss.
