IVC (inferior vena cava) filters are implanted in patients at risk for blood clots and pulmonary embolism. Typical candidates for IVC Filter implants include those who are immobilized, those who are unable to take anticoagulant medications, and those for whom anticoagulant medications are not effective. The device is intended to filter the blood and prevent blood clots from moving through the body and causing a pulmonary embolism.

In 2010, the FDA issued a safety warning stating retrievable filters posed risks of filter fracture, device migration and organ perforation and should be removed as soon as the patient’s risk for blood clots subsided. In 2014 the FDA issued an updated safety communication, stating most devices should be removed between the 29th and 54th day after implantation. Unfortunately these warning came after many had already experienced serious complication or death due to IVC filter complicationsivc2

Known complications include:

  • Filter fracture (pieces can injure the heart, lungs, or inferior vena cava)
  • Device migration (device may become ineffective, or erode into the body)
  • Device erosion, Cardiac tamponade (a condition where fluid builds up in the space around the heart and interferes with heart function)
  • Perforation of the inferior vena cava, heart, lungs, Deep Vein Thrombosis
  • Blood Clots may clog the filter, slowing blood flow into the lungs
  • Retrievable IVC filters can also become stuck or too dangerous to remove.

Evidence shows that Bard and Cook may have known of the increased complication risks associated with their products as far back as the early 2000s and yet failed to inform the FDA, doctors, or the public. Additional evidence has come forward indicating fraud may have occurred during Bard’s FDA clearance process.
